do I need NSM for GUI management of SRX240 or JWEB is enough?
« on: September 28, 2009, 07:43:00 am »
Hi People,
sorry for my ignorance, but I am new to junos world (coming from cisco).
We are considering buying an SRX 240 and I would like to know if you need NSM to manage it via  gui or if the J-WEB interface is enough.
The NSM requires also setting up a server from what I saw, which at the moment we don't have the hardware for it. On the other hand managing all the security polices via the cli would be a nightmare.
thanks,
george

No, you do not need NSM.  J-web is sufficient for managing most of the functionality of the box, including security policy.  Some things are not available through J-web, such as advanced routing configuration and a few other options.

Personally, I would not use NSM to manage just one box.  But when you have multiple boxes, it's VERY useful for templating configuration options, or having a global security policy that gets assigned to multiple devices.  It's also useful for going through logs, setting up email alerts, etc.  You don't need it though.
